Beyond the Beer Mat: A Speculative Project to Spark Connection at The Grayston Unity

Project Type:
 Speculative Copywriting & Concept Development

Speculative Client: The Grayston Unity (Halifax, West Yorkshire)

As a freelance copywriter based in Halifax, I'm constantly inspired by the local businesses that make our town unique. At the top of that list is The Grayston Unity. It’s not just a pub; it's a vital cultural hub—a stage, a gallery, a cinema, and a meeting place. It’s a brand built on community and connection.

This got me thinking: In a space so dedicated to fostering community, every single element should work towards that goal. What if one of the most overlooked items in the pub, the humble coaster, could be transformed from a passive piece of cardboard into an active catalyst for connection?

The Challenge: Turning a Coaster into a Conversation

The brief I set for myself was simple: create a low-cost, high-impact concept that reinforces The Grayston Unity's identity as a cultural hub and actively encourages the very interactions they exist to foster. The solution needed to be simple, engaging, and true to their unique brand voice.

The Insight: The Clue is in the Name

The core insight is right in the pub's name: Unity. In an age where people often sit together while staring at their phones, a physical prompt can be a powerful tool to break down barriers and create tiny, memorable moments of unity between strangers and friends alike.

The coaster, therefore, shouldn't just carry a logo. It should carry an instruction—a gentle nudge to engage with the art, the music, and the people in the room.

The Solution: The Interactive Coaster Series

My concept is a series of interactive coasters. The front would be consistent, establishing the brand and the premise. The back would feature a rotating set of super short, intriguing prompts, ensuring a fresh experience for regulars and an instant introduction to the pub's ethos for newcomers.

Here is the mockup I created for the core design:

Front:

Back (Example Prompt):

The real magic lies in the variety of prompts. Imagine a whole collection in circulation at any one time, each designed to spark a different kind of interaction. I developed several examples, grouped by theme:

To Spark Connection:

  • Cheers a stranger.

  • Ask their favourite gig.

  • Share a Halifax secret.

To Spark Creativity:

  • Doodle the band.

  • Write one true word.

  • Best lyric you heard tonight?

To Spark Engagement with the Space:

  • Find your favourite art.

  • Ask the bar staff's name.

  • What's on next?

The Takeaway

This project demonstrates my core copywriting philosophy: brand voice isn't just about what you say in your ads; it's about what you do in your space. With a little strategic thinking, even the smallest touchpoint can become a powerful tool for brand storytelling and community building. It proves that a simple beer mat can be a stage for connection, reinforcing The Grayston Unity’s mission with every single drink served.

If you’re a brand looking for a copywriter who thinks beyond the obvious to create meaningful customer experiences, I'd love to chat.
